Ahmed Khaled Towfik: where to start

Ahmed Khaled Towfik was a doctor who became the most loved popular writer of his generation in the Arab world, and the father of Arabic horror. Here is who he was, which of his books to read first, and where to go next.

Who is Ahmed Khaled Towfik?

Towfik was born in Tanta, in the Nile Delta, in 1962 and died in 2018. He was a physician who taught at Tanta University’s faculty of medicine.

In 1993 he began Ma Waraa al-Tabiaa (Beyond Nature), a long-running series of pocket novels about Refaat Ismail, a sardonic doctor who keeps running into the supernatural. Millions of young Arab readers grew up on it, and in 2020 it became Paranormal, Netflix’s first Egyptian original series.

His novel Utopia (2008), a dystopia about a walled city for Egypt’s rich, was translated into English and several other languages.

Towfik and A.M. Khalifa share a belief that Egyptian writers belong in popular genres: Towfik in horror and science fiction, Khalifa in espionage thrillers.

A.M. Khalifa grew up in a diplomatic corps family across more than fifteen countries and is the only Egyptian writing commercial espionage fiction in English. His debut, Terminal Rage, has sold more than 500,000 copies and received a starred review from Booklist.
