2014 is the last year for the London Book Fair at the historic exhibition grounds of Earls Court. After a failed bid to block a planned urban redevelopment to tear the venue down and build apartment blocks, the project is going through leaving London with only one exhibition center instead of two. The other being Olympia in Kensington which is not too far away. Residents of Earls Court were up in arms at the imminent loss of revenue, and that the apartment blocks will only benefit wealthy, foreign real estate speculators, damaging the community. But in the end, the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson struck the appeal down.

I felt quite nostalgic to be saying goodbye to Earls Court. I’ve had some wonderful memories here. Made some great friends. And generated a lot of business for my employer. But I am fortunate to have made it here as a writer, at least once. And what a time it is to be an independent writer. I’m working on a dispatch from the London Book Fair, so stay tuned.
